John Lincoln Clem ( Eng. John Lincoln Clem ; [3] August 13, 1851 , Newark - May 13, 1937 , San Antonio ) - one of the youngest soldiers to have participated in the US Civil War , and the youngest noncommissioned officer in the military history of the United States [4] .

In May 1861, John ran away from his native Licking county to join the army of the North . Clem was accepted into the 22nd Michigan Regiment as a talisman and drummer [4] . Participated in the Battle of Chicamog , where from a musket specially cut for him [4] he seriously wounded an enemy colonel (Initially, Clem believed that the officer was killed. that this news was the best in his life) [5] . After the battle, Clem, who had become an orderly at the headquarters of General George Thomas , was given the rank of sergeant [6] . He was wounded twice [5] . He retired from the army in 1864. In 1871, Clem re-entered the military service with the rank of second lieutenant [5] and remained on it until 1915, when he retired as a brigadier general [6] . Already being retired, by the decision of Congress, he was promoted to Major General [4] .
