Youth and War
Sumner was born in Bath , Maine . Immediately after graduating from Harvard University in 1917, he was sent to the Western Front of the First World War . In February-August 1917, drove the ambulance, and then transferred to the Air Force . Already by December there were 7 downed airplanes on his account. In February 1918 he was trained and was transferred to the 95th US air office, stationed in Ysuden .
From June 3 to September 18, 1918 scored five more victories. At the same time, future generals James Knowles and Edward Curtis fought with him. November 4 and 5 shot down two German airships, respectively. Once, even on the airfield of the 95th air division, by mistake, a German plane, piloted by Heinz von Beaulieu-Marconnei, landed. Sumner was the first to notice him and put him on the fly, but this was not taken into account by him in any way.
In the 1920s, he led Colonial Air Transport, and then United Airlines .
Political career
In 1933, Sumner was elected to the Municipal Council of Bath , and the following year, to the House of Representatives of Maine. In 1936, he took the chair in the Senate of Maine, where he was chairman in 1938-1940. In 1940, put forward his candidacy in the gubernatorial elections, and won. As a result of his government, the minimum wage for teachers in the state was set.
After leaving office, Sumner led American Overseas Airlines for a year. In 1946-1947 he worked as the military governor of Württemberg-Baden, who was in the American zone of occupation of Germany . In 1948, he was going to run for office in the Federal Senate , but dropped out for another primaries. On this his political career ended.
In the 1960s he was president of the National Bank of Bath .
On January 26, 1965, Sumner Sewall died.
Family
In 1929, Sewall married Helen Evans. They had two sons, David and Nick, and a daughter, Alexandria.
Sewal's grandfather, Arthur Sewall, was a Democratic candidate for the post of vice president in 1896.
