Biography
Luis Posada studied medicine and chemistry at the University of Havana .
According to the declassified documents of the CIA and the FBI [2] , Luis Posada Carriles was involved in the preparation of the landing in the Bay of Pigs - an unsuccessful attempt by the American secret services in 1961 to overthrow the power of Fidel Castro . Carriles was a CIA officer from 1965 to 1976. He was also involved in US intelligence operations in Nicaragua , Venezuela , Chile, and several other countries.
In 1976, Luis Posada Carriles was arrested in Venezuela and sentenced to imprisonment for involvement in an explosion of a Cuban aircraft flying from Barbados and killing 73 people on board. However, in 1985 he managed to escape. Cuban authorities believe that after escaping from the Venezuelan prison, Luis Posada Carriles was involved in organizing a series of terrorist attacks in Cuban hotels and discos in 1997.
In 2000, Carriles was again behind bars - this time he was convicted in Panama to eight years of imprisonment for preparing an assassination attempt on Fidel Castro. From prison in Panama, Luis Posada Carriles was released early four years later.
In 2005, Luis Posada Carriles was arrested for attempting to illegally cross the American border and was arrested. He was also accused of misrepresenting US immigration services. It was reported that he sought political asylum in the United States, but then withdrew his request [3] : now Carriles tried to remain in the United States on the basis of his military service to this country. In 2007, a court in El Paso , Texas , allowed Luis Posad Carriles to be released on bail.
After the arrest of Luis Posada Carriles in 2005, Venezuela, of which he is a national, sent the United States a request for his extradition, to which the US authorities refused. In Cuba, after it became known that Luis Posada Carriles was in the United States and would not be extradited to Venezuela, mass protests took place, the participants of which accused the United States of supporting terrorism.
On the basis of the charges against him, Luis Posad Carriles in the United States was threatened with imprisonment for up to 60 years. The trial of the former CIA agent accused by the Cuban and Venezuelan authorities in organizing the attacks continued in federal court in El Paso for 13 weeks, and on April 8, 2011, a jury conviction was issued [4] .
