Purple Lobelia , or Cardinal Lobelia , or blood red Lobelia ( lat.Lobelia cardinalis ) is a coastal-aquatic plant of the genus Lobelia of the Campanulaceae family, which grows in the marshes of North America .

Lobelia cardinalis L. , 1753

The plant came to Europe in the mid- 1620s . The name of the plant was given, probably due to the similarity of the color of the flower in the color of the vestments of the Catholic cardinals .

The natural habitat is in America , runs through southeastern Canada , extends south through the eastern and southwestern parts of the United States, crossing Mexico , Central America in the south, and capturing northern Colombia .

Perennial herbaceous plant , during flowering reaches about a meter height. The flowers have a bright red color.

It is cultivated in many parts of the world as a decorative flowering , sometimes as an aquarium plant .

Indigenous peoples of America, the plant was used as a medicinal plant . Contains poisonous alkaloids .
