Content

Title

The genus is named Andre Michaud in honor of the Spanish governor , who helped him and his son with botanical research in Florida [2] .

Botanical description

Inflorescences of Lespedeza capitata

Herbaceous plants , shrubs, or deciduous shrubs , often with creeping or drooping shoots. The surface of the stem is sometimes covered with soft fluffy hairs. Leaves are pinnate, with opposite leaves.

Inflorescences are racemose, drooping. At least 2 flowers are located on a sturdy stalk. At its end are also two very small leaves. Hermaphroditic zygomorphic flowers five-membered, with a double perianth . Five sepals coalesce to form a bell-shaped calyx . Corolla is typical of a moth flower. Sail from oblong to obovate. The boat is bent forward, ends stupidly. The wings tapering to the base are oblong, ear-shaped, fused with a boat. 9 or 10 stamens fuse.

The fruit is an unopened single seed bean .

Spread

Species of the genus are common in East and Southeast Asia from the Himalayas , Japan and China to Australia , as well as in North America , where they grow in tropical and temperate regions.

Economic Significance and Application

Some species are grown as ornamental garden plants and / or as fodder crops, especially in the southern United States . In addition, they are used to enrich the soil and prevent its erosion , since their roots, like all legumes, enter into symbiosis with bacteria that fix the atmospheric nitrogen and convert it into a form available for assimilation by plants, thereby increasing soil fertility. In some places, representatives of lespedeans are invasive species .

Chemical Features

Lespedeza bicolor ( Lespedeza bicolor ) contains bufotenin , I-methoxy-N, N-dimethyltryptamine (lespedamine) in its roots and leaves, as well as related N ω , N ω - dimethyltrilamines and their oxides [3] .

Security

Two species — the crooked-up woodpecker ( Lespedeza cyrtobotrya ) and the hairy woodpecker ( Lespedeza tomentosa ) —are included in the Red Book of the Russian Federation [4] .
