Biography

P.P. Chekalevsky. "The discussion of free arts, with a description of some works of Russian artists" (St. Petersburg, 1792)

Born in St. Petersburg. In 1765, of the artillery sergeants, he was assigned to serve in the College of Foreign Affairs, and in 1767 received an actuary position there; in 1770 he was appointed translator and sent to serve in Vienna under the Plenipotentiary Minister Prince Golitsyn ; then in 1776 he was transferred to Copenhagen , where in the absence of a resident minister for five years he remained charge d'affaires at the Danish court. From 1781 until the end of 1784 P. Chekalevsky served as an adviser to the College of Foreign Affairs.

On the proposal of the President of the Imperial Academy of Arts I. I. Betsky, from January 1, 1785 he was appointed to the position of conference secretary of the Academy.

Received the rank of state adviser.

In August 1799, P. P. Chekalevsky was appointed vice president of the Academy of Arts.

March 3, 1800 was promoted to the rank of State Councilor.

Mason, founding member of the " United Friends " box in St. Petersburg, which A.S. Stroganov at the same time was a member of . In 1812-1816, he was a great collector of alms from the Great Provincial Lodge (at one time it was called the Lodge of Vladimir to Order). In 1816 he was also the founder of the "Northern Friends" box in St. Petersburg.

After the death of the President of the Academy, Count A. S. Stroganov , the Minister of Education, Count A. K. Razumovsky , who knew Chekalevsky well in the diplomatic service, at the emergency meeting of the Academy on October 12, 1811, declared the Highest Will so that the Academy of Arts would continue to be governed Vice President Chekalevsky. Creativity

In 1793, Chekalevsky published in favor of the Academy’s pupils the book “ Reasoning about Free Arts, with a Description of Some Works of Russian Artists ” (St. Petersburg, 1792); and the book “Experience of sculpting from bronze with one technique of colossal statues” - “Essai sur les op érations pratiqué es lors de la fusion en bronze des statues colossales d'un seul jet” (St. Petersburg, 1810, simultaneously in Russian and French), with a dedication to Emperor Alexander I, which describes the method of casting colossal statues, practiced in the foundry of the Academy of Arts; for the students of this workshop, the book over the years served as a guide in their art.

Rewards

The merits of P. Chekalevsky were recognized and highly valued by Emperors Paul I and Alexander I. He had orders to St. Anne of the 1st degree inclusive, moreover, in 1802 he was awarded the diamond cross of St. Anne of the 2nd degree, St. Vladimir of the 4th degree and St. Vladimir of the 3rd degree; in addition, from Paul I he received a snuffbox with diamonds, and from Alexander I - a diamond ring for dedicating his “Experience” to the Emperor.
