Biography
After graduating from the University of Chicago, Yeats was called up to serve in the Navy (1944-1946).
Between 1949-1963 and 1965-1999, he sat in the House of Representatives , representing the 9th Illinois constituency
In the mid-1950s, the Senator from Maine, Frederick Payne , initiated the adoption in 1958 of a law banning the sale of knives with folding blades. Yeats actively participated in the discussions, as he was also a supporter of the theory that if you stop selling such knives, then crime among young people will fall. The law did not live up to expectations, as instead of knives, gangs began to use firearms.
In 1962 he ran for the Senate , but lost to Republican Everett Dirksen. He did not work for a long time at the UN . In 1964 he was again elected to the House of Representatives . There he was a member of the Appropriations Committee.
Sidney Yates was on good terms with the Chicago liberal reformers. He also advocated US support for Israel .
In 1993, President Bill Clinton awarded him the civic Presidential Medal. In 1999, the building of the Auditors Building Complex in Washington was renamed in honor of Yates - "Sidney Yates Building".
