Biography
Early years
Born December 31, 1995 in Virginia . She began gymnastics at the age of 6, when her older sister Ariel convinced her mother to write them into a section [2] . The first coach was Dan Walker [3] . At the age of eight, Gabrielle won the gold medal in the all-around championship in Virginia [4] [5] .
2010
In 2010, Douglas makes his debut in the Super Cup Nastya Lyukin , where he is fourth in the all-around [6] . At the CoverGirl tournament in Chicago, she becomes third on the balance beam, sixth in the vault and ninth in the all-around [6] . At the junior US championship, Douglas wins the silver medal on the beam, becomes the fourth in the all-around and takes the eighth place in the floor exercises [6] [7] [8] .
In October, 14-year-old Gabrielle went to West Des Moines , where she continued to train under the guidance of Liane Chou , coach of Beijing Olympic champion Shawn Johnson [9] , and also switched to home schooling [10] [11] . Although Walker later stated that Douglas could have won the Olympics while staying in Virginia, Gabrielle herself decided to find a coach of a different level [3] . The impetus for the move was Chou's invitation to improve Douglas's choreography [3] , and she herself was amazed that Chou taught her to perform the most complex element in one day [12] . After that, Gabriel decides to move to Texas to train with a famous trainer, but Chow refused it only out of respect for Walker. After much persuasion, Chow nevertheless agreed to accept Douglas for training, although at first he was skeptical about coaching the young Gabriel [13] .
2011
During the performances in the Jesolo trophy in Italy, Gabriel won the gold medal in team competition, becoming the second in the floor exercise, the third on the balance beam and the fourth in the all-around and vault jump [6] . At the US Championships, Douglas ranks third on the uneven bars and only seventh in all-round [6] , but at the World Championships in Tokyo Gabriel helped the team win gold, and also ranked fifth in exercises on uneven uneven bars [7] [8] .
2012
At the America's Cup in March, Douglas gets the highest overall rating among girls, ahead of her compatriot and current world champion Jordin Weiber , but these points did not count because Gabriel was a spare [14] . In March, she won the team competition in the championship of the Pacific region, and also became a champion on the uneven bars [15] . At the national championship Douglas she gets gold on the uneven bars, silver in all-round and bronze in the floor exercise. Excellent performance on the uneven bars led to the fact that Gabriel had the nickname " Flying Squirrel " [16] [17] [18] . The inclusion of the US team at the Olympics led to Gabriel appearing on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine [19] , and also took part in a talk show by Brian Williams [20] . July 20, Gabrielle appeared on the cover of Time magazine [21] .
London Olympics
As part of the US team, Gabrielle made her debut at the Olympic Games in London, becoming a two-time Olympic champion: on July 31, she helped the US team in team competitions by competing on all shells [22] , and on August 2 she conquered the all-around . Thus, Gabriel became also the first African-American Olympic gymnast [23] [24] [25] [26] who won the team and absolute championship at the Olympics [27] . But on uneven bars Gabrielle acted unsuccessfully and took the last place at all [28] . On August 7, Gabrielle competed on the beam, but failed again, breaking from the projectile: she took 7th place [29] . However, Gabrielle generally performed successfully, becoming a two-time Olympic champion.
After the Olympics
Personal life
Father - Timothy Douglas, mother - Natalie Hawkins [30] . There is brother Jonathan [10] and sisters Joel and Ariel, who helped her get into a great sport.
During the 2012 London Olympics, an unpleasant story happened to the athlete: the American television station NBC subtly hinted at the similarity of Gabriel with the monkey, showing after the news about the victory of Gabriel a commercial with a monkey on gymnastic rings [31] [32] .
