Biography
Nikolai Zhgun was born on November 8, 1917 . On November 21, 1938, Zhgun was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army in the Nevelsky District Military Commissariat of the Kalinin (now Tver ) Region [1] .
From the first days of World War II - on its fronts. He distinguished himself during many battles, received the military rank of lieutenant . In September 1943 he joined the CPSU (b) . By February 1944, Zhgun was a Komsomol of the 1st Battalion of the 237th Rifle Regiment of the 76th Guards Rifle Division. In the early morning of January 14, 1944, during the battle for the city of Kalinkovichi in the Gomel region of the Belorussian SSR, Zhgun was the first in his unit to make his way to the building of the Kalinkovichi city council and put up the Red Banner on it. During the liberation of the Kalinkovichi region on the Tremlya River, Zhgun was injured. After recovery, he returned to duty [2] .
During the war years he was also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree (11/21/1943) and two orders of the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree (02/22/1945, 05/28/1945) [1] . In 1969, Zhgun was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the city of Kalinkovichi [2] .
He was sacked in reserve with the rank of major . He lived in Smolensk [2] . He died on December 12, 1989, was buried in the New Cemetery of Smolensk.
