Player Career

Tony Barton played one match for the student team of England, as well as 5 matches for the youth, he started his club football career with Fulham , to which he joined at the age of seventeen. After the lease term at Sutton United , he received professional status with Fulham in May 1954. He scored 8 times in 49 games for Fulham.

He moved to Nottingham Forest in December 1959, but did not establish himself in the team, played only 22 games (scored one goal), later moved to Portsmouth in December 1961, where he subsequently became a playing coach. After retiring as a player, having played 130 games and scoring 34 goals for Portsmouth, he remained in the club’s coaching staff.

Coaching career

He subsequently joined Aston Villa's coaching staff, becoming assistant coach to Ron Saunders in 1980. The club won the championship in 1981, and Barton was appointed head coach in February 1982 after Sanders resigned.

He led the club during his victory over Bayern Munich in 1982 in the European Cup finals, as well as in the UEFA Super Cup the following season, but his league appearances (sixth in 1983 and tenth in 1984) did not match their success in Europe , and Barton was fired in May 1984.

In July 1984, he became a Northampton Town trainer, but left office in April 1985 after suffering a heart attack. In September of that year, he became assistant coach of Southampton , Chris Nicholl , remaining at the club until May 1988. He later became an assistant coach at Portsmouth and in February 1991 took over as the acting director following the dismissal of Frank Burroughs.

After leaving Portsmouth, he worked as a scout in several clubs.

On August 20, 1993, Tony Barton died of a heart attack at the age of 56.
