History

The Catholic parish in Pastavy was formed in 1522 , when a wooden church of the Mother of God was built here. During the Russo-Polish war of 1654-1657, the temple was completely destroyed. In 1760 a new Catholic church was built, it has not survived to our time, in its place now stands the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas .

In 1640, the royal secretary, Stanislav Begansky, initiated the founding of the Franciscan monastery in Pastavy, and the monastery and temple were built in the steep bend of the Mjadelka River . After the uprising of 1830, the monastery was closed, the remains of the monastery church were dismantled.

In 1886 , priest Stanislav Vysotsky was rector of the Postavy parish of the Disney dean’s [1] .

On the site of the former monastery church, designed by architect Arthur Goibel in 1898-1904 [2] (according to other sources in 1880-1887 [3] ), a modern neo-Gothic red brick building was erected. Construction was carried out on the foundation of the old church of the monastery, but the new church is oriented north-south, while the old one had a traditional east-west orientation. The new church received the name of St. Anthony of Padua.

In 1915 , Joseph Krauyalis was rector of the Postavy Church of the Nadvilei Dean’s [4] .

During the First World War, the church was badly damaged, arches, roofing, windows, doors received significant damage; destroyed the metal fence around the temple, the organ , the main altar and pulpit . After the war, Pastavy became part of Poland , the temple was restored. In 1939, Pastavy became part of the USSR , the last rector Boleslav Matseevsky, was arrested and died in Stalin's camps. The temple was closed, after the Second World War , a warehouse was made in the temple, then workshops of an industrial enterprise were located there.

In 1988, the church of Anthony of Padua was returned to the Catholic parish. After a long restoration, the temple was opened for worship. Priests from the Congregation of Priests of the Sacred Heart of Jesus feed the parish.

Architecture

The church is a three-nave basilica with a five-sided apse , transverse transept and two side sacristy . The temple ship and the transept sleeves are covered with a high gable roof. Above the crossroads of the central nave and transept is a small spire. The main architectural dominant of the church is a tetrahedral bell tower with a faceted spire over the central part of the main facade.
