Classification
APG Systems
The classification systems APG ( 1998 ) and APG II ( 2003 ) placed this order in the monophyletic group Magnoliids and uses the following hierarchy:
- Magnoliferous order
- Annonaceae family
- Degeneriaceae family
- Eupomatiaceae family ( Eupomatiaceae )
- Himantandraceae family ( Himantandraceae )
- Magnoliaceae family
- Muscat family ( Myristicaceae )
In the APG system, the Magnoliaceae family is recognized as basal and is excluded from the list of eudicots.
Earlier Systems
The Kronquist classification system ( 1981 ) placed this order in a subclass of mangoliids ( Magnoliidae ) and includes the following families:
- Magnoliferous order
- Annonaceae family
- family Austrobaileyaceae
- Canellaceae family
- Degeneriaceae family
- Eupomatiaceae family ( Eupomatiaceae )
- Himantandraceae family ( Himantandraceae )
- Lactoridaceae family
- Magnoliaceae family
- Muscat family ( Myristicaceae )
- Winter family ( Winteraceae )
The Thorn classification system ( 1992 ) designated this order as an integral part of the Magnolianae superorder, a subclass of mangoliids ( Magnoliidae ) and uses the following classification:
- Magnoliferous order
- Amborellaceae family
- Annonaceae family
- Kirkazonov family ( Aristolochiaceae )
- family Austrobaileyaceae
- Calicant family ( Calycanthaceae )
- Canellaceae family
- Chloranthaceae family
- Degeneriaceae family
- Eupomatiaceae family ( Eupomatiaceae )
- Gomortegaceae family
- Hernandiaceae family
- Himantandraceae family ( Himantandraceae )
- Badian family ( Illiciaceae )
- Lactoridaceae family
- Laurel family ( Lauraceae )
- Magnoliaceae family
- Monimiaceae family
- Muscat family ( Myristicaceae )
- Pepper family ( Piperaceae )
- Saururaceae family
- Schisandraceae family
- Trimeniaceae family
- Winter family ( Winteraceae )
Engler's classification system (1964) placed the order in a subclass of Archychlamydeae of the dicotyledon class ( Dicotyledoneae ) and listed the following families:
- Magnoliferous order
- Amborellaceae family
- Annonaceae family
- family Austrobaileyaceae
- Calicant family ( Calycanthaceae )
- Canellaceae family
- Crimson family ( Cercidiphyllaceae )
- Degeneriaceae family
- Eupomatiaceae family ( Eupomatiaceae )
- Eupteleaceae family
- Gomortegaceae family
- Hernandiaceae family
- Himantandraceae family ( Himantandraceae )
- Badian family ( Illiciaceae )
- Laurel family ( Lauraceae )
- Magnoliaceae family
- Monimiaceae family
- Muscat family ( Myristicaceae )
- Schisandraceae family
- Trimeniaceae family
- Tetracentraceae family
- Trochodendraceae family
- Winter family ( Winteraceae )
The Wettstein classification system , the latest version of which was published in 1935 , did not use the name Magnoliales, but it was Polycarpicae with a similar structure.
