Biography

Born in Kutaisi. He started wrestling from the 2nd grade of the school when he was invited to the wrestling section by a children's coach Vitaly Alavidze [4] .

At 16, he won the championships of the USSR and Europe among young men. In 1987, he won a gold medal at the Junior European Championship in 1987 in the Polish city of Katowice in the weight up to 88 kg [5] , and also became the USSR champion among juniors.

In 1990 he moved from Kutaisi to Moscow, where Viktor Mamiashvili became his coach.

In 1991, he won the World Cup in Greece [6] . Subsequently, he twice participated in the World Cups: in 1992 (victory) [7] and 2003 (bronze) [8] .

He went to the Olympics in Barcelona for gold, but lost in the first fight with a score of 1: 2 to Turkish Hakki Basaru, whom he had previously won several times. Nevertheless, Koguashvili gathered for the remaining fights in the subgroup and managed to win them. But since the Turks did not lose a single fight, Koguashvili could only fight for bronze. In the battle for 3rd place, he defeated Swede Michael Lindberg and became the bronze medalist of the 1992 Olympics.

Five-time world champion, first won this title in 1993 in Stockholm. Four-time European champion.
