Biography

He studied music theory and piano at the Amsterdam Conservatory , composition from Kees van Baren at the Hague Conservatory . He taught at the Hague Conservatory. He created the Schoenberg ensemble ( 1974 ), which he has been leading up to the present day (currently, the Asko | Schönberg ensemble). He founded the Dutch Society of Charles Ives . Since 2004 he has been teaching at Leiden University .

Regularly conducts the largest orchestras of the Netherlands, has repeatedly performed as a guest conductor in France, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, USA, Japan, Australia. He lectured at the Juilliard School . He was the artistic director of the Oldeburg ( 1992 ) and Tanglewood ( 1994 - 1998 ) music festivals.

Compositions

The author of orchestral and vocal compositions, piano music, two operas - Reconstruction ( 1968 - 1969 , co-authored with L. Andrissen , M. Mengelberg , P. Schat , J. van Vleimen according to the libretto by Hugo Klaus and Harry Mulish ) and Axel ( 1975 - 1977 , the libretto by H. Moulisch based on the drama of Villiers de Lille-Adana ).

Performing Repertoire

As a pianist he performed the compositions of Ferruccio Busoni , George Anteyle , Eric Sati , Alexander Scriabin , Dm. Shostakovich , Galina Ustvolskaya . Conducted by orchestral and opera compositions by Liszt , Schoenberg , Webern , Stravinsky , Nikolai Obukhov , Janachek , Britten , Messian , Ligeti , G. Ustvolskaya, S. Gubaidulina , Claude Vivier , L. Andrissen , St. Reich , R. Zuydama .

Recognition

Winner of numerous performing arts awards. Honorary Doctor of Utrecht University ( 1994 ). Cavalier of the Order of the Netherlands Lion ( 2008 ).
