Biography

Norma Tolmage was born into a poor family in Jersey City . After her father left the family, she and her two younger sisters Natalie and Constants (also becoming actresses) remained in the care of her mother. Norma Tolmadzh began her acting career with participation in short films in 1910 on the East Coast , and after achieving certain successes and fame, she moved to Hollywood in the early 1920s. Specializing mainly in melodramas, Tolmadge played her most famous role in Sidney Franklin ’s film “A Tender Smile” in 1922 [3] , and in addition to that, her role in Frank Borzeigi ’s dramas “Secrets” (1924), “Lady” ( 1925), where she also acted as a producer and Dove (1927). It is believed that Norma Tolmaj laid the foundation for the tradition of leaving footprints and palm prints in front of the Grauman's Chinese Theater , accidentally stepping on wet concrete in front of its entrance in the spring of 1927.

From 1916 to 1934, the actress was married to an influential American producer Joseph Schenck , with whom she created her own production company. Throughout the 1920s, Norma Tolmadzh remained one of the most elegant and glamorous movie stars, but by the end of the silent movie era her popularity had waned. [4] In 1930, after two sound films with her participation failed at the box office, Tolmaj ended her acting career. After the divorce from Schenk, Tolmaj was married twice more, but she did not have children from any marriage.

Tolmage spent the later years of her life in solitude, avoiding appearing in public. Suffering from arthritis [4] and being addicted to pain medications [5] , she moved to Las Vegas , where she spent her last years. In 1957, Norma Tolmage suffered a series of strokes, and on Christmas Eve of that year, she died of pneumonia at the age of 63. At the time of her death, her fortune was estimated at $ 1 million. [6] The actress was buried in the Hollywood Forever cemetery, where her sisters were later buried next to her. Her contribution to the US film industry is marked by a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
