Getting
- Electrolysis of the melt Y 2 O 3 • 2 B 2 O 3 with the addition of magnesium oxide and fluoride (ratio 1:15). For electrolysis, platinum , tungsten and molybdenum cathodes are used.
Physical Properties
Yttrium hexaboride forms dark blue crystals of cubic syngony , space group P m3m , cell parameters a = 0.408 nm, Z = 1.
Chemical Properties
Yttrium boride is soluble in hot concentrated sulfuric acid , in conc. nitric acid at 0 ° C. It also interacts with melts of alkali, carbonates and nitrates of alkali metals .
