British forces tried in every possible way to prevent the unification of the forces of Ali Bey Ishan and Khalil Kut , who was retreating from Baghdad . British intelligence reported that the Ottoman forces would unite in Baakub, where the Turkish garrison was located .
On March 14, British troops launched an offensive on Baakuba. But on March 17, the Baakuba garrison began to retreat north to join the army of Ali Bey Ishan. Lieutenant General Henry Carey intended to destroy the entire garrison of Turks at Mount Jebel Hamlin, moving his army north after the retreating Turkish troops. At this point, Ishan's soldiers dug in on a mountain hill. On March 25, the British attacked a well-fortified Turkish position. Soon, the troops of Ali Bey Ishan retreated southwest to the Tiger . Keri moved on to meet with the allied Russian troops. But having arrived to them, he found out that they did not want to fight. Therefore, he deployed his troops to the city of Samarra .
