History
The first securities transactions began back in the 1920s, when Kenya was a British colony. At that time, exchanges did not formally exist and all transactions were made according to a " gentleman's agreement " - the parties relied on each other's honesty and good intentions.
In 1951, a real estate agent, Francis Drummond, founded the first professional brokerage firm and persuaded Kenya's finance minister, Sir Ernest Wacy, to begin forming an exchange in East Africa. In July 1953, they turned to the London Stock Exchange and agreed to establish the Nairobi Stock Exchange as an overseas exchange, in what status it was until 1963, when it became independent along with the declaration of independence of Kenya, after which there was a serious drop in capitalization due to uncertainty and uncertainty investors.
In 1988, the first privatization of the state-owned Kenyan company through the Nairobi Stock Exchange took place - the successful sale of a 20% stake in the State Commercial Bank of Kenya .
February 18, 1994, the exchange index of the twenty largest issuers - NSE 20-Share Index - set a historical record, reaching a value of 5030 points. The International Finance Corporation recognized the exchange as one of the most promising stock markets with more than 179% growth. Around the same time, the number of brokers on the exchange grew for the first time, eight new companies received a license.
