Biography
Born on October 27, 1917 in the village of Teplovka in the Piryatinsky district of the Poltava region in a peasant family. Ukrainian. Member of the CPSU since 1943. He graduated from seven classes of high school. In 1935 he graduated from the Rutchenkovsky Mining College. He worked as an electric locomotive driver at a mine in the village of Rutchenkovo (now in the city of Donetsk).
In 1938, drafted into the ranks of the Red Army. In the battles of World War II from June 1941. He participated in the Battle of Stalingrad, in the Korsun-Shevchenkovsky operation, in the liberation of Krakow. In the regiment, A. A. Ivanko was rightly considered one of the bravest warriors.
During the breakthrough of the enemy’s defense at the Sandomierz bridgehead and battles for Krakow, the brave tanker acted as part of a platoon assigned to the assault battalion. When the commander of the tank platoon died, foreman A.A. Ivanko took command of the unit, and our soldiers continued to smash the Nazis.
The machine of A. A. Ivanko was repeatedly surrounded, but the brave foreman cleared the road with fire and caterpillars, broke out of the encirclement and moved forward. Thanks to the support of tankers, the assault battalion deeply penetrated the enemy defenses.
In the area of the city of Wojciechow, a platoon of tanks under the command of A. A. Ivanko, through a bold roundabout maneuver, entered the highway that led to Krakow and blocked the Nazis from retreating.
In the battle of Neudorf, the newly appointed platoon commander was out of action. And again A. A. Ivanko transmits by radio: “Platoon, follow me!” “Thirty-four” of the brave foreman first burst into the city.
During the battles from January 12 to March 12, 1945, the tank crew, commanded by A. A. Ivanko, destroyed two 105-mm self-propelled guns, a battery of 75-mm guns with tractors, a mortar battery, a Ferdinand self-propelled gun , two tanks, two armored personnel carriers and about 250 soldiers and 150 officers.
By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of June 29, 1945 for the courage and bravery shown in battles with the Nazi invaders at the Sandomierz bridgehead and during the liberation of Krakow, the foreman Alexander Andreevich Ivanko was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal ( No. 7941).
In 1945, A. A. Ivanko was discharged. He worked as a director of a soap factory. He lived in Kiev. Died July 27, 1990. He was buried in Kiev at the Baykovsky cemetery .
He was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner, two orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree, the Order of the Patriotic War of the 2nd degree, the Order of the Red Star, and medals.
