Asuncion is a stratovolcano with a height of 965 meters. The cone of the volcano extends towards the north of the island. The southern slope of the volcano is cut with cracks as a result of a landslide. In the southern and western parts of the volcano lies a thick layer of ash, which was formed as a result of volcanic eruptions.
Aboriginal people lived near the volcano. But at the end of the XVII century, the local population left the island as a result of the eruption of 1690. In total, Asuncion erupted about 4 times. The first official eruption that occurred was recorded in 1906. At that time, the volcano released lava, which flowed down the western and southern slopes of the volcano. In 1924, insignificant activity of the volcano was recorded.
In the period from May 11 to May 27, 1992 the island was visited by 6 volcanologists from the US Geological Survey . They recorded the release of steam in several places from the crater of the volcano.
