Biography

Childhood

Rubina Ali was born on January 21, 1999 in Mumbai , India . The Ali family belonged to the lower strata of society and lived in slums that were not far from Bandra station [2] . Rubina's mother Khurshid left the family after her divorce from her husband. Rubina lives with her father Rafik, sister Sana, brother Abbas and stepmother Munni. Munni has four children from his first marriage - Suraya, Sanjid, Babu and Irfan [3] [4] .

In 2008, Ali starred in the British film Slumdog Millionaire . The picture tells about the young man Jamal Malik, who won 20 million rupees in the program “ Who wants to become a millionaire? " [5] . According to the creators, they argued for a long time about whether to argue for the role of real children from slums, fearing to break their fate. Director Danny Boyle later approved the casting. [6]

Together with all the other actors who played the main characters - Jamal, Salim and Latika - at different ages (Ali played the role of Latika in childhood), Rubina attended the 81st Academy Award ceremony . The picture "Slumdog Millionaire" received 8 Oscars, in particular, in the nomination " Best Film ". Azharuddin Mohammed Ishmael who played Salim in his childhood came with his mother, while Rubin was accompanied by his uncle. This was her first trip outside Mumbai. [7]

In the newspapers often appeared the statements of journalists that the young actors did not receive his fee. Manufacturers objected, stating that the money would be paid to the actors after graduating from high school [8] . According to The Daily Telegraph , Ali received £ 500 for a month-long shoot [9] . Fox Searchlight Pictures, a spokesperson for the movie company, said it was tantamount to three annual salaries for an average Indian [9] .

Boyle said he did not want to publicize the exact amount paid to the children for the filming [10] [11] . He also stated that he paid for the education of Ali and Ishmael [9] . However, this was also met with criticism, as journalists questioned that children raised in slums would be able to graduate [9] . In addition, after the success of the film in Hollywood, the Indian authorities said that the children will be provided with apartments, but despite this, the actors returned to the slums [12] . Ali lived in them until March 2011, when they burned down [13] .

In 2009, the British tabloid News of the World , as part of its investigation into the exploitation of children in Mumbai, sent "intermediaries" to Rubin's father. Rafik and her uncle Rajan entered into negotiations on the sale of the girl to the family of the “eastern sheikh”, asking for $ 297,000 for her. Rubina's father explained his desire to sell his daughter to the poor financial situation of the family, which, according to him, “received nothing for participating in the film” [14] .

Further career

In addition to her, the film starred Azharuddin Mohammed Ishmael, another young actor from the film "Slumdog Millionaire", as well as such famous actors as Shah Rukh Khan , Rishi Kapoor and Juhi Chawla [15] . In 2009, Ali released the Slumgirl Dreaming autobiography, in which she talked about her childhood and shooting in Slumdog Millionaire [1] .
