Gogarty, Oliver St. John

Oliver St. John Gogarty Oliver st John Gogarty [gō'gurtē]; August 17, 1878 , Dublin - September 22, 1957 , New York ) - Irish poet and prose writer . He was also an otolaryngologist , athlete, politician, belonged to the "cream of society" ( German: Schickeria ) and from 1922 to 1936 he participated in the work of the Parliament as a senator .

Life Facts

Gogarty's contemporaries either loved him or despised him, he supported the poor people and the Irish resistance, organized in 1904 a literary circle at Dungwire Castle , which included among others Ladies Gregory , George Bernard Shaw , John Millington Singh , William Butler Yates , Edward Martin .

As a student, Oliver met at the National Library of Ireland in Dublin with James Joyce , who after their quarrel made Gogarty the prototype of Bull Mulligan, one of the unpleasant characters in his novel Ulysses [4] [5] .

At the VIII Summer Olympics in 1924 in Paris / France, Oliver Gogarty participated in an art competition (nomination - literature). His Ode to Team Games was awarded a bronze medal.

In modern Dublin, there is a pub named after The Oliver St. John Gogarty , where you can listen to traditional Irish music [7] , and join in general free or literary discussions.

 
Martello Tower . Photo 2006

The Martello Tower on the seashore, which was shot by Gogarty while hosting James Joyce, became the scene of the first episode of the novel Ulysses [8] . Now in the tower is a small museum [9] .
