London Luton Airport , opened in 1938, is one of the main airports in Britain. Also in the city is the University of Bedfordshire .
The city has long been known for the production of hats. Luton is also famous for the carnival, traditionally held during bank holidays. It is the largest one-day carnival in Europe.
History
Transformed into a unitary unit on April 1, 1997 from the area of the former non-metropolitan county of Bedfordshire .
Geography
It covers an area of 43 km² and borders in the south, west and north with the unitary unit Central Bedfordshire , in the east with the ceremonial county of Hertfordshire .
Population
184,371 people live in the city, with an average population density of 4,253 people / km² [1] . As of 2014, the population was 205,000. The population of the city is heterogeneous. One of the lowest percentages of white Britons in the country among cities was noted (55%; in London and Birmingham, this figure is, according to various sources, from 50 to 57% and 53-63%, respectively). 12% of the population are representatives of other white nations (Poles, Czechs, Albanians, Ukrainians). There are large Indian and Pakistani diasporas (over 20%), there are not very many blacks and mestizos in the city, but their percentage is higher than in other large cities. 48% of believers are Christians, 24% are Muslims, there are large groups of Sikhs, Hindus and atheists. Compared to other cities, the percentage of atheists in the city is relatively low (10%). [2] .
Policy
Luton is governed by a unitary council of 48 deputies elected in 19 constituencies [3] . As a result of recent elections, 36 seats on the council are occupied by Labor [4] .
Economics
On the territory of the Luton unitary unit, at Luton Airport, the headquarters of the major EasyJet airline is located , whose shares are included in the FTSE 250 Index calculation base. Also located here is a Vauxhall automobile manufacturing plant owned by General Motors Corporation ; Churchill tanks were produced at the plant during World War II.
Sport
Luton Town Professional Football Club is based in Luton , playing in the Championship 2019/2020 season. Luton Town hosts rivals at Kenilworth Road Stadium (capacity 10,226 spectators).
Education
The city has one of the campuses of Bedfordshire University .
