Akhiy is an underwater volcano of a conical shape, at a depth of 137 meters. Initially, an unusual color of ocean water was observed in the area of the volcano, and in 1979 in this area the crew of a fishing vessel, as a result of unrest in the sea, saw outgoing sulfurous vapors from the water. April 24-25, 2001 there was an explosive eruption of an underwater volcano. The explosion was recorded by a seismic station on the island of Rangiroa , belonging to the Tuamot Atoll. Seismic activity was observed in the region of 15 km in the vicinity of the underwater volcano. There are other submarine volcanoes in the Ahiya area.
