Gazi University ( tour. Gazi Üniversitesi ) is a higher education institution located in Ankara .
It was founded in 1926 by the order of Kemal Ataturk as an institute for training teachers. In 1982 , as a result of a merger with the Ankara Academy of Economics and Commerce, the Ankara State Academy of Engineering and Architecture and several other educational institutions, it was transformed into a university. Currently, the University of Gazi consists of 25 faculties, includes 18 research centers and a number of other departments. The university has about 50,000 students, including 1,500 students from the Turkic countries of Central Asia . Among the graduates of the university are prominent Turkish writers ( Ilkhan Berk , Mustafa Balel ), politicians, 2004 Olympic champion Nurdjan Taylan .
