Biography
In 1825, Gould graduated from Harvard College, and in 1830 received a doctorate in medicine. Settling in Boston, he devoted himself to practical medicine and ultimately achieved a high social position, as well as recognition as a professional doctor. He was president of the Massachusetts Medical Society, and kept state records of births and deaths.
As a conchiologist, he was widely known and was one of the pioneers of American science. His articles were published on the pages of the (edition XI, p. 197 contains a list) and other journals. Together with Louis Agassis, he published The Principles of Zoology (2nd edition, 1851), edited The Terrestrial and Airbreathing Mollusks (1851–1855), and translated Lamarck 's book Gerea of Shells (1833).
The most important scientific works are Mollusca and Shells (edition XII, 1852) and The Report on the Invertebrata (1841).
Gould was a corresponding member of all the famous American scientific societies, as well as many in Europe, including also the Royal Society in London.
