According to the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary , the foundation of Noah’s tomb, which was shown by local Armenians, is described by some Persian and Armenian historians in 1539 BC. e. [1] . As the inspector of the Nakhichevan city school K. A. Nikitin noted, thanks to the traditions and religious feeling of the Armenians, the tombs of Noah and other members of his family were preserved from destruction, maintained and restored so as not to lose their original appearance [2] . The "Caucasian calendar" for 1852, listing Christian and Muslim monuments of Nakhichevan, classifies the tomb of Noah as Christian [3] . According to the description, the tomb was a chapel, which is the remnant of the former church. In the old days, this chapel was the lower floor of the church that existed here. You could enter the chapel by going down the stairs. The interior of the temple was almost round and with arches supported by a central stone pillar. Under the latter, according to Armenian legend, is the dust of Noah [3]
Scottish traveler John Foster Fraser Having visited the region in the 1920s, he noted that the place was considered holy by the Armenians [4] . During the holidays, Armenians in crowds came to the chapel, where after worshiping the grave of Noah and bringing gifts, they had the custom of attaching small stones to the arch of the chapel. Superstitious Armenians believed that if their pebbles stick, then their desires and requests will be fulfilled [2] .
In its present form, the mausoleum was built by decision of local authorities in 2006. The tomb consists of the remains of the lower floor of the former chapel. They go down the stairs to the crypt. In the middle of the crypt stands a stone pillar. According to legend, under this pillar are the relics of Noah. A painting by Bahruz Kengerli depicting the state of Noah’s grave, in which she was 100 years ago, has been preserved in the National Museum of Art of Azerbaijan .
