Biography
He was born on August 25 ( in the new style on September 6 ) in Poltava in 1906 in a family of workers. After graduating from elementary school, he worked at the Poltava sausage factory [1] .
In 1924 he was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army . Demobilized in 1934 . He worked as a mechanic at Vodokanaltrest [2] .
Secondarily called up in January 1940 . He graduated from the Mirgorod Military School. In the battles of World War II from October 1941 . He fought on the Stalingrad and Central fronts as part of the 1035th Infantry Regiment of the 280th Infantry Division .
The division was formed in December 1941 as the 280th Infantry Division of the second formation, in the spring of 1942 it was transferred to the 48th Army of the Bryansk Front and maintained its defense in the area of the Russky Brod railway station on the Oryol - Livny line . At the end of 1942, the division participated in breaking through the defensive fortifications of the Germans in the region of Livny. As part of the 70th army, she participated in the liberation of Kursk , liberating the city of Fatezh and advancing in the direction of Orel [3] .
After the formation of the Kursk Bulge in this area, the 280th Infantry Division held the defenses in the northern part of the Kursk ledge, and then, having received replenishment, was transferred to the very center of the Kursk Bulge, as part of the troops of the 60th Army .
The platoon of Lieutenant Gerashchenko was especially distinguished during the liberation of Ukraine in the summer and autumn of 1943. In collaboration with other units, the 280th division liberated Konotop on September 6, and Bakhmach was soon liberated. The division participated in the liberation of Nizhyn of the Chernihiv region . Hacking the enemy’s defensive lines, destroying his equipment, units of the 280th Infantry Division quickly reached the Desna River near the town of Oster and forced it on the move. Pursuing the enemy, the regiments reached the Dnieper [3] .
Fighters of a platoon of lieutenant Gerashchenko from the 3rd rifle company of the 1035th rifle regiment on the night of September 26 were among the first to cross the Dnieper near the village of Sivka. September 27, they entered into battle with the enemy on the right bank of the Dnieper [2] .

During this fierce battle with the enemy, Mikhail Moiseevich was wounded, but continued to fight, commanding a platoon. Two days later, on September 29 , in the battle for the village of Rotichi in the Chernobyl region, Lieutenant Gerashchenko again showed courage and iron endurance, inspired fighters for feats with a personal example. In this battle, M. M. Gerashchenko was wounded a second time. But, bleeding, he did not leave the battlefield and did not leave his soldiers until they finally settled down in a busy village. A platoon of Lieutenant Gerashchenko in this battle destroyed the Nazis to the company. After the battle, the courageous commander was taken to the medical battalion, and from there to the hospital, where doctors fought for his life for more than eight months [2] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 17, 1943, for the courage and heroism shown when crossing the Dnieper and holding the bridgehead on its right bank, Lieutenant Mikhail Moiseevich Gerashchenko was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal .
After leaving the hospital, Mikhail Moiseevich could not return to the army. He became a railwayman . In 1945, Lieutenant Gerashchenko was sacked. He lived in Kharkov . He worked at the railway station Balashovka [1] .
He died on June 28, 1972 . He was buried in Kharkov.
Memory
In honor of the Hero of the Soviet Union, a post-war street was named in the Oktyabrsky district of Poltava (runs from Panas Mirny Street to Lesya Ukrainka Street).
