Perspectives on the Economy

In his views, as expressed in his theoretical work Le socialisme d'Etat et la Réforme sociale (2nd ed., 1890 ), Jeanne joined the school of liberal economists ( Paul Leroy-Beaulieu , Leon Say , Molinari ), opponents of the state interventions in distribution issues. The modern economic system, according to Jeanne, was not free from many significant shortcomings, while the state was not able to destroy them. The reasons for this, according to Jeanne, are as follows:

  • original sin , which made suffering the inevitable destiny of people;
  • the weakening of religious feelings both in the upper strata of society and among the people, as a result of which the emergence of bitterness in relations between classes
  • the great revolution , secularizing the clergy and destroying unnecessarily hasty collective ownership of land, corporations, and patriarchal relations between owners and workers.

Practical activities in favor of the victims of the industrial system should consist primarily in religious propaganda ("the best means is a new subjugation of the inner barbarians by the Gospel "). Religion must be expected to fully resolve the entire social issue, for which it is necessary to provide the church with complete freedom and endow it with sufficient money.

All charitable institutions should be strictly religious in nature, "allowing the workers who have fallen from the church to reap the fruits of their unbelief." The capitalists should financially support the charitable endeavors of the church, they should be imbued with Christian mercy themselves and treat their subordinates fraternally, and the workers should selflessly bear the duties assigned to them by fate, not carried away by futile dreams of equality and not envious of the rich. Inequality does not constitute a feature of only the real economic system: it is fair in itself and is necessary for progress . The prosperity of science and art requires that a certain part of society provide the other part with the necessary leisure and even a certain share of comfort.

In the Catholic camp, Jeanne occupied a prominent place, standing in extreme right positions. Opponents were Catholics, grouped around the Count de Men . State intervention and labor legislation, which de Men and his friends persistently sought, are the main subject of contention between the two groups. In this controversy, Jeanne showed himself to be very unfair to opponents, for whom the sympathies of the progressive part of the Catholics remained.
