Biography

Charlotte was born in a simple family. After graduating from high school, worked as a stenographer. In 1919 she joined the youth socialist organization, in 1921 - into the Communist Party of Germany . She worked as a stenographer in the Central Committee of the KKE, later in 1922-1923 in the apparatus of the Communist Youth International in Moscow. At one of the receptions in Moscow, she was personally introduced to Lenin , and in her book “My Life”, Lotta enthusiastically spoke of this meeting. In the years 1924-1926, Lotta worked in the CNG faction in the Reichstag . Subsequently, she was elected to the central committee of the Union of Communist Youth in Germany, and also worked in the trade mission of the Soviet Union in Berlin.

In 1931, together with her first husband, Erich Wendt, she emigrated to the Soviet Union . In Moscow, Lotta studied at the Academy of Marxism-Leninism and the Communist University . After the arrest of her husband in 1937, Lotta was also investigated as a result, according to the results of which she was reprimanded on the party line. In 1938, Walter Ulbricht appeared in Moscow, and Lotta linked his further fate with him. In the years 1939-1941 Lotta worked as a typesetter in a printing house that produced literature in foreign languages.

Returning to Germany, Lotta headed the General Department of the CC of the KKE in 1945. In 1946, Walter Ulbricht adopted the girl Maria Pestunova from the Leipzig orphanage, since relations with Lotta were childless. The girl, who later received the name of Beata Ulbricht , was born in 1944 from an Ukrainian woman who was hijacked to work in Germany and who died during the bombing of Leipzig. In 1991, Beata Ulbricht was found murdered in her apartment in Berlin.

Since 1947, Lotta worked as a personal employee of Walter Ulbricht. In 1953 they got married. In 1953-1959 Lotta Ulbricht studied at the Institute of Social Sciences, in 1959-1973 she worked at the Institute of Marxism-Leninism and was responsible for the editorship of Walter Ulbricht’s speeches and essays. Retired in 1973.

After the unification of Germany, Lotta lived in solitude in her home in the Niederschenhausen district of Berlin and refused to be interviewed. Buried at the Weissensee cemetery. Lotta's older brother Bruno participated in the anti-fascist movement and died after being taken prisoner. She was buried at the Weissensee cemetery in Berlin.
