Geography

Herne lies between Bochum and Recklinghausen on the southern slope of the Escher Valley, on a sandy terrace. The city is surrounded by mining and industrial landscapes. The highest point in the city is 130 m, the lowest is 33 m above sea level. The longest city from north to south is 6.3 km, from west to east - 12.2 km.

Water

The northern border of Herne is formed for a considerable extent by Emscher , in whose valley the Rhine-Herne canal passes. The numerous tributaries of the Emscher flow through the territory of Herne. These are Börniger-Bach, Sondiger-Bach, Storhengraben, Landverbach and Rosbach , Ostbach with a tributary of Mühlenbach , Schmidesbach , Dorneburger-Bach and Hüller-Bach.
