General Information

Williams sisters won their third Olympic tournament in women's doubles; in their careers, they played 15 matches in this tournament and won each of them. Before them, no one won this competition more than twice.

Serena won all of her 15 matches at the Olympics, but Venus alone lost: in 2004, she and Chandu Rubin beat the Chinese pair Li Ting and Sun Tientian , who became champions that year.

The Czech and Czechoslovakian couples played a title match for the third time and lost for the third time.

Russian women won the Olympic medal for the first time in this category. On account of the USSR / CIS national team the bronze medal of games-1992, where the duet Leyla Meskhi / Natalya Zvereva took the bronze medal.
