History
Bergisch Gladbach was first mentioned in historical documents in 1271 under the name Gladbach. The city belonged to the county, and later to the duchy of Berg . From 1806 to 1808, the city was occupied by Napoleonic troops, in 1815 passed to Prussia . Since 1822, it was part of the Rhine province of Prussia. In 1848 it was first mentioned as Bergisch Gladbach, which is fixed on the postmark. In 1856, Bergisch Gladbach received the status of a city. Then the city had almost 5,000 inhabitants.
Since 1863, the city was officially called Bergisch Gladbach in order to avoid confusion with another Gladbach, which was called Monchengladbach . During the administrative reform of 1975, the cities of Bergisch Gladbach and Bensberg merged. Until the beginning of the 20th century, iron ore was mined in the city .
