About the album
The album was produced by Hugh Padham and Chris Thomas , who replaced the departed Martin Rachent . Compared to the previous record, Hysteria was less successful commercially. However, there were fewer gloomy songs in it than in Dare [2] . “ The Lebanon ”, “ Life on Your Own ” and “ Louise ” were released as singles, but only “The Lebanon” achieved greater commercial success, unlike other singles. All singles were in the twenty chart of Great Britain [6] [7] , and only “The Lebanon” on the sixty-fourth line [8] hit the US chart.
“I Love You Too Much” was previously recorded for the Fascination mini-album ! , it was later redone and included on the Hysteria album. “Rock Me Again and Again” is a cover version of a James Brown song. “Don't You Know I Want You” was previously an instrumental version of “Total Panic” - the b-side of the song “ (Keep Feeling) Fascination ”, but it was revised and included in the album. In 2005, Caroline Records reissued the album and added some bonus tracks to the reissued album [2] . In the UK, the disc received a golden status [9] .
Critically, the album was met with indifference. The reviewer from Allmusic expressed the opinion that the disc is mediocre, and the melodies presented on it are uniform [1] . PopMatters columnist Felt Hunter was supportive of the record, but did not hide its flaws, expressing regret that the song “The Sign” did not become a single, although it rated The Lebanon positively. In his opinion, “Don't You Know I Want You” is the most terrible song in the work of The Human League. “At Hysteria, the band changed their sound towards the priest , thereby trying to prove that electronic music is not only created just for experimentation, but can also merge with pop music.” Nevertheless, in solidarity with the critic from Allmusic, he considers the album to be of poor quality [2] .
