Metal machine music

Metal Machine Music: The Amine β Ring - Lou Reed's fifth solo studio album, released in July 1975 . Standing alone in the entire discography of Reed, the album consists entirely of fragments of guitar feedback recordings played at different speeds, there is no melody or speaker in it. Many consider Metal Machine Music exclusively as a mockery of the public or an odd job that they had to record at all costs in order to fulfill their obligations under the contract with the label, but at the same time critics admit that with this album Reed largely anticipated the principles of industrial and noise rock .

Sources of Inspiration

Critics noted that avant-garde music of the 1960s and, in particular, the work of La Monte Young and his Theater of Eternal Music , with which, among other things, members of the first group collaborated, served as a possible source of inspiration for Reed. Reed The Velvet Underground John Cale and Agnus MacLize . It is interesting to note that the first officially released recording of The Velvet Underground, made for the conceptual art project of Andy Warhol and David Dalton and published as an attachment to the magazine Aspen, was a composition called Loop, which was also a guitar feedback record, the volume of which was intensified as it approached the end.

Criticism and Reviews

Critics greeted the album with bewilderment; subsequently he was repeatedly included in various lists of the “worst albums of all time” (for example, in his book “The Worst Rock 'n' Roll Records of All Time” Jimi Guterman and Owen O'Donnell put him in second place in the list of worst rock and roll -roll records in history). Rolling Stone 's Billy Altman described it as “a two-disc set consisting of an unheard e-dre, guaranteed to clear a room of people in record time — and nothing more.” Nevertheless, there were journalists who treated the album more sympathetically: among them were the authors of Punk magazine (as Victor Bokris wrote, “Metal Machine Music” can be understood as “exemplary concept punk album and forerunner of New York punk”) and Lester Bangs who wrote an article about him under the humorous title "The Greatest Album in the History of Mankind". Despite the overall disapproval of critics (and perhaps because of it ), Metal Machine Music bought up quite actively - in the United States , according to the booklet for the album released on CD, over 100,000 copies were sold. It is known, however, that many buyers familiar with the work of Lou Reed from his more radio format records returned the acquired copies to the store, taking them for "damaged".
