Description and interpretation
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary with the baby Christ and two angels. The candelabra on the sides is a rare motive that refers to the ancient Roman emperors and is a symbolic representation of Christ and Mary as the king and queen of heaven. The character of light and shade and soft colors give the characters soft and delicate features.
The researchers believe that the angels were performed by assistants of Raphael [2] .
Owners
Until 1693, the "Madonna with Candelabra" was in the collection of the princes Borghese in the Palazzo Borghese (Rome). Then changed several owners and in 1901 was acquired by Henry Walters. In 1931, transferred to a will as part of the Walters collection of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore , where it is currently stored [2] .
