Biography

Ikeda was born into a Japanese family from Fengtian ( Manchuria ), at the end of World War II, the family moved to Nagano . In order to learn how to become an artist, Ikeda moved to Tokyo in 1952, but his three attempts to enter Tokyo University of the Arts were unsuccessful.

Nevertheless, Ikeda took up engraving, falling under the influence of an avant-garde art group from the Democratic Art Association led by Ei-Q.

Works of 1956-66 are considered to be one of the best in his work, and are mainly performed with a dry needle. In 1958, Ikeda unexpectedly won an award from the Ministry of Culture, a year before taking part in the first Tokyo International Biennale of Engravings. Masuo Ikeda became the first Japanese artist to be awarded a separate exhibition at the prestigious New York Museum of Modern Art . In 1966, he won the International Grand Prix in the field of engraving at the 33rd Venice Film Festival , after which until 1976 he took up lithography and the technique of intaglio printing mezzo-tinto . In the mid-1970s, he created one of the best series of engravings, “Fruits,” where poetry lines were included.

In 1977, Ikeda received the Ryunosuke Akutagawa Prize for the novel "An Offer in the Aegean Sea" ( エ ー ゲ 海 に 捧 ぐ e: hekai ni sasagu ) , distinguished by frank erotic descriptions. In 1979, on the basis of this novel, he made a film with the Italian porn star Cicciolina in the title role. Another frank film shot by Ikeda in 1980 is Homage du.

Features of work

The main theme of the work of Ikeda is female eroticism . Many of his works with a dry needle are not full of colors and abstract. A frequent background is a blue cloudy sky, as in the picture “Betrayal of Images” (1929). Such paintings as “Birds and a Woman” (1960) are closer to the genre of caricature .

In the paintings “Reverence of Picasso” (1982) and “Window of Matisse” (1986), the style of the named artists is noted, in the painting titled on the Somatsu Sanka (Ten) romaji ( “Song of Praising Sotatsu” , 1985) reflects the influence of the traditional Japanese style . In some of his later engravings (The Shining Sea, 1986), Ikeda is close to Matisse's work.
