Story

The young agronomist Samur is obsessed with the idea of developing a new variety of corn - “early ripening”, which would produce two crops a year. From old people he learns that such a variety existed in the old days, but then was forgotten. He could have been preserved by the elderly miller Badawi, who lives alone high in the mountains, because once he did not want to move along with everyone to the plain.

Badavi's daughter and his 16-year-old granddaughter Chegeri are fellow villagers of Samur. Chegeri works at the post office and has long been sympathetic to Samura, although he does not immediately notice it. Meanwhile, Samur’s father wants to have his engagement with Zeynab, the daughter of the deputy minister. Like Samur, Zeynab is not enthusiastic about this, because she is in love with Dr. Murad.

Going in search of a hurry, Samur is not engaged. He manages to find Badawi, from whom Samur learns that the variety of corn that he is looking for is called “chegeri”. However, Badawi is severe in nature and tells Samur that he does not have this corn. At night, Samur steals several cobs from Badawi, but they turn out to be the most common variety. Due to the theft, Samur is left without clothes, gets home in this form, and his father puts him under lock and key.

Samur learns from old Kichi that earlier seeds of early ripening were added to jewelry with the symbol of a scarab beetle. Chegeri says she has such an ornament. Opening it, Samur discovers three kernels of corn, but already dried up. Due to the strip of failures, he becomes depressed for a long time. However, schoolchildren come to his house, who, under the leadership of Chegeri, have collected samples of maize varieties in a hundred villages.

In the epilogue, three years later, Badawi moves to a village with his daughter and granddaughter. In the aul, Samura and Chegeri are getting married. An article is published in the newspaper stating that Samur managed to develop a variety of corn that produces two crops a year, and he called it “chegeri”.
