Aoba is a shield volcano . The volcano is built in Hawaiian style. Altitude - 1496 meters. Most of the volcano is under water, more than 3900 meters. If we consider the height of the volcano from the ocean floor, then the peak mark of the volcano will be 5396 meters.
Aoba Volcano is one of the most massive volcanoes in the Vanuatu archipelago and covers an area of 2500 km². The diameter of the crater reaches 6 km. Aoba consists of a pyroclastic cone in the center of which several calderas are formed, which are filled with water. Currently, 3 lakes have formed on the top of the volcano, which have different shades: Manaro-Ngoru , Manaro-Lacua , Vui . The crater of Lake Manaro-Ngoru was formed 360 years ago. Volcanic tuff formation arose 60 years later. It is known that the eruption that occurred in the XVIII century destroyed the entire population of the island, which lived in the west of the island of Aoba .
The last time the volcano erupted in 2011 for several months. The volcano threw sulfur dioxide into the air. Aoba constantly exhibits volcanic activity, from time to time on the lakes you can see explosive bursts of activity. Since the XVI century, the volcano actively erupted more than 7 times.
The island's population currently lives in the north of the island, but the smell of sulfur dioxide emissions is present in the air.
