The name of the painting comes from the name of the British banker and collector Edward Solly (1776–1848), from whose collection in 1821 the painting was acquired by the Berlin Museum [1] .
Description and interpretation
The painting depicts the Virgin Mary with a baby in her lap; in Maria's right hand is a small book to which her attention is drawn. The book is a symbol of scripture, which announces the tragic fate of Christ . Looking into the book, the Infant holds in his left hand a goldfinch tied to the foot by the string - a very common children's toy at that time. Madonna Solly is an early work by Raphael and reflects the influence of his teacher Perugino .
