Biography
Salvatore Cordilleone was born on June 5, 1956 in the city of San Diego, USA. After studying at the seminary of St. Francis of Assisi and the University of San Diego (1974-1978), he studied in Rome at the North American College of the Gregorian University (1978-1982).
On July 9, 1982, he was ordained a priest and continued his studies at Gregorian University , after which he defended his doctoral dissertation in canon law in 1989. From 1982 to 1985 he served in the parish of St. Martin of Tours. Acted as Secretary of the Archbishop from 1989 to 1991. From 1991 to 1995 he served in the parish of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Guadalupe in Calexico . From 1995 to 2002, he was a representative of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signature in Rome.
On July 5, 2002, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Salvatore Cordilleone the titular bishop of the Diocese of Natchez and the auxiliary bishop of the diocese of San Diego . On August 21, 2002, he was ordained bishop.
On May 23, 2009, Salvatore Cordilleone was appointed as the Ordinary of the Diocese of Auckland
Archbishop of San Francisco
On July 27, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Bishop of Cordilleone the Archbishop of San Francisco. [1] The appointment of Cordilleone and the adoption of the resignation of his predecessor, Archbishop George Hugh Niederauer, was announced on July 27 in Washington by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano and the Apostolic Nuncio in the United States of America . [2]
Views
Cordilleone is considered theologically conservative prelate . [3] Opponent of same-sex marriage , he was one of the creators of Proposition 8 [4] and once he said: “Only one idea of marriage can withstand ... If it is considered fanatical, we are going to see that our rights are being taken away, as it is already happening ". [3] In addition, he opposes abortion and also supports the use of the Roman Liturgy for the 1962 missal , now known as the extraordinary form of the Roman rite. [5] Archbishop Salvatore Cordilleone is known for his sympathies for the Trent Mass and has repeatedly served pontific masses in extraordinary rites.
