“ Vesti la giubba ” ( Italian. “Wearing a costume”) is a famous tenor aria from the opera “The Hats ”, written by Ruggero Leoncavallo in 1892. “Vesti la giubba” completes the first act, when Canio, having revealed his wife’s unfaithfulness, must nevertheless prepare to perform in the role of the Pagliac.
Aria is considered one of the most touching in the operatic repertoire of that time. The pain of Canio is portrayed in the aria on the example of the notion of “the tragic clown”: he smiles externally, but cries inside. As before, today also the role of a clown often involves painted tears on the artist's cheek.
The recording of this aria by Enrico Caruso (1904) was the first in history, sold a million copies [1] . The aria melody formed the basis of the song It's a Hard Life of Queen .
