Biography

Upon completion of the course at the Reims College in 1838, Zhamen entered the highest normal school, from which he graduated in 1841 with the first reward for teaching physics. In 1847 , when he was already a teacher at the college of Louis in Paris , he defended his doctoral thesis "On the reflection of light by metals" ("Annales de chimie", 3 Série, T. XIX, 1847 ).

From 1852 to 1881 Zhamen was a professor at the Polytechnic School. In 1863 he was appointed professor of the Sorbonne . For 20 years, Zhamen here attracted a large number of listeners with his talented experimental lectures. Zhamen possessed a great skill to simplify difficult questions and to find solutions to many intricate problems of physics with the help of ingenious devices and devices (a device for studying elliptical polarization , an interferential refractometer, magnetic scales ).

“Traité général de Physique” was published in Jamen’s first edition in the early 1860s and was a collection of lectures in physics given by Jamen at a polytechnic school. As a student and follower of Cauchy , Jamin spent a lot of work on developing methods for experienced evidence of Cauchy’s analytical conclusions in the theory of light . Zhamen also successfully studied magnetic and electrical phenomena , problems of molecular physics and hygrometry .

Jamin was also interested in geology and botany , studied music and painting . In 1868, Jamen was elected a member of the French Academy of Sciences , in which, after the death of Dumas , he held an honorary position of permanent secretary.

The son of J. Zhamen , Paul Zhamen , was a famous artist who wrote in the style of academic classicism.
