Biography

Born April 12, 1916 in the commune of Lucca , Kingdom of Italy [1] .

The mechanic-driver of the M11 / 39 tank of the 4th Tank Regiment ( Maletti group), sergeant Umberto Dianda, distinguished himself during the Egyptian operation of the Italian troops in the Alam Abu Hilat region ( North Africa ).

On November 19, 1940, two tank columns M11 / 39 were sent to confirm the data of the air reconnaissance to Bir-Emba , which were attacked by superior British forces in the Alam Abu Hilat area and destroyed. After the projectile hit the tank that killed two other members of its crew and wounded it in the neck, arms and legs, Sergeant Umberto Dianda continued to lead the tank and fire a pistol until he lost consciousness due to blood loss. On November 21, the remnants of the reconnaissance group returned to the location of the main forces of the 4th Tank Regiment [2] .

From the presentation of the award [1] :

Alam Abu Hileiuat (Africa Settentrionale), 19 novembre 1940.

Together with Sergeant Umberto Dianda, Lieutenant Giuseppe Locatelli and Junior Lieutenant Leo Todeschini distinguished themselves in the same battle.
