Bhopal is a state of India that existed in 1949-1956.

Nawab Bhopala, until recently, opposed joining the Indian Union , and in March 1948 expressed the desire that the principality become a separate independent state. In December 1948, unrest began in the principality, and on April 30, 1949, the Nawab was forced to nevertheless sign an agreement on the incorporation of the principality into India. On June 1, 1949, the principality was transformed into a category “C” state with its capital in Bhopal .

In 1952, the state held elections to the Legislative Assembly. Of the 30 seats, 28 received the Indian National Congress , 1 - Hindu Mahasabha , 1 - an independent candidate. On March 20, 1952, Shankar Dayal Sharma was elected First State Prime Minister.

In 1956, in accordance with the State Reorganization Act , the states of Bhopal, Madhya Bharat and Vindhya Pradesh were annexed to the state of Madhya Pradesh , the capital of which was the city of Bhopal .
