The Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Literature ( French Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres ), the former royal, is a French scholarly society in the field of humanities , one of five members of the Institute of France .

History

The Academy was founded in February 1663 by the efforts of the Minister of Finance, Jean-Baptiste Colbert , called the Royal Academy of Inscriptions and Medals , as a small community of experts on history and antiquity . The initial task of the Academy was to compose Latin inscriptions and slogans for monuments and medals in honor of King Louis XIV . Later, she united humanities scholars in the fields of history, archeology and linguistics . Colbert attached great importance to the Academy of Inscriptions , because “inscriptions on medals, monuments, stelae live longer than books and paintings” [1] .

Since 1701, the Academy of Inscriptions and Medals has been the official state institution; renamed the Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Literature in 1716 .

She studied and continues to study historical monuments and documents, languages ​​and cultures of ancient civilizations, the Middle Ages and the classical period , as well as non-European civilizations.
