Biography

Claude-Casimir Gillet was born on May 19, 1806 in Dorman . Like his father, Gillet studied at a military veterinarian, in 1823 he entered the Alfora Veterinary School. In 1825 he was awarded the cross of the Legion of Honor .

In 1830, Casimir joined the French military expedition to Algeria . There Gillet for four years had the opportunity to study the flora of the Mediterranean region .

Returning to France, Gilles settled in Lyon , where he studied entomology with Etienne Mulsan . In the next few years, Gillet published four important theses on veterinary medicine. In 1847, he moved to Alencon , where he lived until his death.

In 1863, the book Nouvelle Flore Française was published, containing brief descriptions of many plants from all over France, the result of a joint work by Gillet and professor of the Alforsky school Jean Henri Many. Then Claude-Casimir began work on a book on the flora of mushrooms. The first part was published in 1874 , the exact dates for the publication of subsequent parts are unknown, the last was published in 1893. The book contained the first descriptions and color drawings of many macromycetes ( higher mushrooms ) of France. After the publication of this book, Gillet gained fame not only throughout France, but also in Germany, England, and the USA.

September 1, 1896 Claude-Casimir Gilles died.

Currently, most of the herbarium samples of mushrooms collected by Gilles are stored in the herbarium of the Paris Museum of Natural History (PC).
