From Biography

Hershele Ostropoler was born in the Volyn town of Ostropol . By profession, he was a shoikhet, that is, a butcher who slaughter cattle and poultry in accordance with ritual prescriptions, but the need made him a traveler. During one of these trips, he was taken to his service as a jester-adviser by the famous tzaddik Rebbe Borukh Tulchinsky, also known as Borukh Medzhibozhsky (1750-1810), the grandson of Baal Shem Tov .

A folk joker and wit, Ostropoler not only entertained the tzaddik with his funny jokes, trying to save him from melancholy, but sometimes he condemned his temperance and bouts of causeless anger. According to legend, after one of these witticisms against the tzaddik, the Hasidim threw Ostropolera from the stairs and he soon died, apparently from his wounds.

Herschel is buried in the old Jewish cemetery Mezhdibozh. The inscription on the tablet, written in Hebrew, is translated into Russian as follows [1] :

Buried here
holy rabbi Zvi from Ostropol,
referred to as Herschel Ostropoler,
the righteous and God-fearing,
living in Galicia
in the third generation of hasidism
court jester rabbi Baruch from Medzhibozh,
grandson of Baal Shem Tov
