One of the main results of his research is that he showed: the proportion of Jews in the Zaporozhye environment was quite significant - in some cases, they even acted as independent military Jewish-Cossack units.

Biography

Born in the family of lawyer Yakov Aronovich Borovoy and Elizaveta Davidovna Brilling. Brother of Israeli politician David Bar-Rav-Haya .

In 1924, Borovoy graduated from the Law Faculty of the Odessa Economic Institute, and at the same time he studied at the Faculty of Archeology. In 1930 he graduated from the graduate school at the Central Scientific Library and successfully defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of pedagogical sciences (“Scientific Library in Modern Conditions”), which in the same year was published as a separate book in Kiev . Subsequently, in the aggregate of publications, he was awarded the degree of candidate of historical and candidate of economic sciences.

Borovoy's professional career began with the Jewish Academic Library in the early 1920s . He later worked at the Central Scientific Library and at the State Archive; taught at various higher education institutions.

In the 1930s , Borova focused almost exclusively on Jewish history. He discovers in the archives of the Zaporizhzhya Sich opened by A. A. Skalkovsky many documents in the Jewish language that formed the basis of his doctoral dissertation “Studies on the history of Jews in Ukraine of the 16th – 18th centuries” ( 1940 ), which was defended at the Institute of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The dissertation consisted of three parts - “Jews in the Zaporizhzhya Sich”, “National Liberation Struggle of the Ukrainian People Against Polish Domination and the Jewish Population of Ukraine” and “Jews in Left-Bank Ukraine in the 17th — 18th Centuries”. The first two parts were published in the journals "Historical Digest" and "Historical Notes", and the third remained unreleased.

In 1934 - 1977 , Borovoy worked as a professor at the Odessa Credit and Economic Institute.

In 1978 he moved to Moscow. Recent studies by S. Ya. Borovoy are devoted to the death of Odessa Jewry during the Second World War. The book of memoirs of a scientist ( 1993 ) covers the period from pre-revolutionary years to the present day; it shows the figures of the Jewish culture of old Odessa, people of art, philosophers, historians and revolutionaries.

In total, Borova published more than 200 works - articles, books, chapters, textbooks, articles in reference books and encyclopedias, reviews.

He was buried in Odessa.

In 2003, the centennial anniversary of the birth of S. Ya. Borovoy was widely celebrated in Odessa - a number of publications appeared in the press, the scientific conference “Odessa and Jewish Civilization” was held in November, dedicated to his memory, the Migdal OC opened in the Museum of the History of Jews of Odessa exhibition dedicated to the scientist.
