Biography

He studied law at École de droit. Interested in herbarization during excursions, Tyure asked the famous scientist Joseph Decken to introduce him to botany. Deken at that time was engaged in algae, which, undoubtedly, had an impact on all further botanical activities of Tyure.

In the years 1839-1840. Turet visited Constantinople as an attaché to the French embassy, and in 1841 traveled to Syria and Egypt . Later, Thuret settled in Rentilly, where he arranged for himself a scientific laboratory. Already in 1840 he published his first study of sperm in archers ( Chara ), then in 1842-1843. studying zoospores in freshwater green algae and the history of the development of the blue-green alga Nostoc . Together with Deken in 1844-1845. Thuret works on the seashore in Normandy, studies male reproductive organs in Fucus and opens zoospores in brown algae, previously completely unknown. Without leaving freshwater algae at the same time, Thuret is still working on the anteridia of higher spore plants. The results were presented to him in a paper published in 1847 and awarded by the Paris Academy of Sciences.

To have the material at hand, Thuret settled on the seashore - in Cherbourg . Here he opens and directly observes the process of fertilization in Fucus, that is, the fusion of the sperm with the egg. In 1857, he moved south, to Antibes , near Nice, built a villa and surrounded it with a wonderful botanical garden , one of the best in southern France. From here, from the south, he repeatedly travels to the north, on the shores of the Atlantic and the English Channel , where he carries out his famous research on the sexual process in scarlet, or red algae. In the 1870s, Thuret continued these studies, but also worked on other issues of algology, among other things, on the propagation of Monostroma , a large marine green algae.

For many years, Turet collected materials for a large work conceived by him, in which all the most interesting and important regarding the structure and propagation of algae would be presented. He did not have time to implement this plan. His materials were processed, supplemented and published by Ed. Borne , his friend and collaborator, named: Ed. Bornet et G. Thuret, Notes algologiques (I — II, 1876-1880) and Études phycologiques (1878). In their content, in the accuracy and grace of the drawings, both of these works were exemplary and classical in the entire literature on algae. A detailed biography of Thuret was compiled by Ed. Borne and published in the Mémoires de la Société nationale des sciences naturelles de Cherbourg (vol. XX, 1876).
